Greg Cartwright Spins & Interviews Don Nix!

Denny Cordell-Don Nix-Leon Russell
Tune in tonight when Greg Cartwright spins 45s from his personal collection and interviews the great Don Nix!  Tune in at 7 PM on the Ichiban stream.  Don has a new book out called "Memphis Man - Living High, Laying Low on Sartoris Literary Group.  It's an updated version of " Road Stories And Recipes"  with more stories & amazing photos and less recipes.  Don got his start as the sax player for the Mar-Keys and had a front row seat for all the amazing music coming out of Memphis in the '60's.

WFMU's Michael Shelley also interviewed Don for his Saturday morning program.  Archive here.

Bonus:  Michael has shared his famous mac & cheese recipe with us!

Norton Donations & Volunteer Help

Rockin' Joe Belock

I'm sure you've heard by now.  Norton Records has suffered a terrible blow in the shape of hurricane Sandy.  I'd like to thank all the "first responders" who have been helping out down at the warehouse, and at Norton H.Q., removing and drying records.  It's the kind of physical help that leaves you feeling like you're making a difference.  It's also the kind of help that folks in the Brooklyn, NY area are more equipped to provide.  But the norton family spreads out far past the five boroughs in every direction!  And the rest of us can help too.  By making a contribution.  This contribution will help to restore Norton's supply of jackets and sleeves for the salvaged LP's and 45's.  I remember once having a conversation with Miriam about the beginning of the label and where it has progressed to today.  It was while she and Billy were graciously housing the band at their home during the recording of the Mary Weiss album.  She remarked that "Norton isn't just a company or a label, it is it's own being with a heart and soul."  Nurtured and reared by a family of wild Rock and Roll fans all over the world!  And it is so true.  And now Norton needs our help.  Your help.  So that it may remain a home to superb music for generations to come.  Donate now!

You can also email nortonrec@aol.com for more info on how to lend a hand in Brooklyn.  Stay tuned for upcoming benefit concerts for Norton as well as a 1 day WFMU record fair that will include a Norton table with new stuff for sale!!

James Brown Month: GODFATHER in the GARAGE - Papa's Got a Brand New Trash Bag

While "Out of Sight" is probably the number one garage/frat/show band JB cover, and there's no shortages of "Try Me", today we're featuring a trio of versions of "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag."

First up is this lo-fi live version from Mike St. Shaw & the Prophets, found on the Audio Fidelity (of all things) release Where It's At: Cheetah, in 1966. Cheetah was a dance club in New York, on the sight of the old Riviera Ballroom at Broadway and 53rd. It's a weird Audio Fidelity release, in that there is little fidelity to the audio, and not all the material is ace, but Tucson, AZ based St. Shaw and the Prophets perform a ripping medley of Good Lovin/Papa, the papa portion presented here.

papa's got a brand new hump!

The Invictas version is pure snotty teenage thrust, which is appropriate from this band of Rochester, NY humpers.

The slickest, floor-fillingest version of the lot comes from future Redbone stars Pat and Lolly Vegas, from their At the Haunted House LP. The Haunted House was located in Hollywood, and while I doubt the album was recorded live, it's an excellent California rock 'n' roll party record with a  great guitar/bass sound.

Special thanks to Greg Cartwright for the loan of the Invictas and Pat & Lolly records.  More from the Cart-chives in the next couple of weeks.
