Casual vibes on the latest What's Happening?!?!

Today on What's Happening?!?! Got a smattering of this and a smattering of that.
Including this latest find.

The Casuals were a late 60s post-pepper British beat group. With their groomed locks and scrubbed faces, they scored a massive hit in 1968 with "Jesamine." Heavy dose of Bee Gees influence on their music. Their next effort "Toy" was a more uptempo rocker with the expected horns and strings, but it retains that classic beat group sound.

Tune in today at 3pm!

Sunny and the Sunliners, one-hit wonders ?

Sunny and the Sunliners (originally Sunny and the Sunglows) were a group of chicanos from San Antonio, featuring lead singer Sunny Ozuna and his fellow students from Burbank Vocational School. They were mainly active from 1959-1966, with lots of singles and several albums, bowing out with a final LP in 1977. (The band name may be a reference to the slick Ford Sunliner convertibles, current in the 50s.)

Ichiban listeners know this brilliant, rockin' number, with Tex-Mex and soul/R&B influences.
No One Else Will Do

Which leaves the burning question : what else did they have ? Friends, I just listened to a hundred of their songs on YouTube, and while there is some solid work, there seems to be no other comparable track. Impossible to say where this aberration came from.

The band's output seems to fall into several categories. Many songs are what I will call – out of my ignorance – "mariachi" style. In any case, they sound like this.
De Mi Nada Mas

Then there are some with a Tex-Mex border sound, like their San Antonio neighbors the Sir Douglas Quintet.
Sufriendo Y Penando

Others are slow ballads.
Talk to Me (Little Willie John cover, charted #11 pop, #12 R&B)
Think it Over

Some songs are more soul-oriented.
It's Okay
Or R&B.
Oop Oop Pidoo [sic]

Here, they put the brass section to work.
Hip Huggin Mini

If anybody knows of anything else in their repertoire like No One Else Will Do, call me collect !!!

Stop press !!! Bazooka Joe sez check this one out. Thanks, Joe !

The Kitchen Cinq : that means "five" in French

Yeah, this Amarillo Texas garage band is best known to Ichiban listeners for their brilliant interview by Harry Harrison on The In Sound. That's all I knew too, so when I saw this review by Lenny Helsing (The Thanes) of a newly-issued anthology CD, I went to YouTube to see what they sounded like in their early, garagey days.

The Kitchen Cinq - Please Come Back To Me (1966)

The Y'alls (pre-Kitchen Cinq) - Run For Your Life (1966)

According to this fascinating, detailed blog, they went on to record an album produced by Suzi Jane Hokom and featuring the Wrecking Crew on some of the instruments. Jim Parker, one of the guitarists, went on to a successful career in country music.

Patsy Clinger (now Walker) tells the story of how the Clinger Sisters turned into the Clingers and became the first all-female rock group to sign to a major label in the US. From the very beginning as little kids learning to sing harmony to the mid 60's when they had their own record label and worked with pre-Millenium Curt Boettcher and Lee Mallory, right up to their musical culmination with Michael Lloyd and Kim Fowley and the Clingers version of Gonna Have A Good Time Tonight, Patsy tells the girls story and you won't want to miss it! DJ Terry Knight leads the Pack!

Musician and songwriter, Terry Knight started his career as DJ Terry Knapp as a teenager in Michigan in the early 60's. He used Knapp for a few years, then changed to Terry Knight - and even began working at CKLW in Windsor which is where he got the idea to start a band.

Here's an aircheck of Terry from WEAM in 1968

He was frustrated at having to fit into a particular radio format, and preferred a more freeform style. You gotta wonder if that's when he thought up How Much More

The Pack made some killer records! Check out Numbers!

Being in the Pack didn't stop Terry Knight from also being a DJ, he went on to work for WTRX, who apparently really liked his band!

Terry was also infamous for scoring a Capitol Records solo gig in the late 60's, sitting in on the Beatles White album sessions and writing his Paul is Dead song Saint Paul. He also put Grand Funk Railroad together with a few x-Pack members and a few ? & The Mysterians - hoping to manage and produce them. Everyone fired him.
Then he went on to start his own label in the early 70's but the drug scene won over.

In Nov. 2004 Terry Knight was stabbed to death by his daughters boyfriend as he tried to protect her from the assault.

Long live Terry Knight!
