Crayons To Perfume! 7pm

The girls are at Ichiban every Wednesday at 7pm for Crayons to Perfume! and this week, host djgirlgroupgirl brings you some of her newest finds and favorites and plus you can win a copy of the new girl group compilation album HONEYBEAT! so tune in, and join in the conversation to win at WFMU.org on the Rock'n'Soul Ichiban stream - just look for the link for playlist and comments...and get ready to answer the skill testing question!!

Honeybeat features the eldest of the Franklin girls - Erma, and I don't Want No Mama's Boy - recorded during Erma's short sojourn at Epic Records, a stand out song for Erma, who for the most part liked to stick to fairly straight ahead material which was highly gospel influenced although she did have her contemporary favorites like Jackie Verdelle, Gladys Knight and Dionne Warwick - who all dabbled in adult contemporary soul. Heartbroken after finding out that her earliest musical experiences with Motown ended with her being no more than a demo singer, Erma learned to live in two worlds. Her father insisted she get a college education which she did, and had something to fall back on. Her degree came in handy after leaving the Lloyd Price Orchestra (where she sang after her contract with Epic ended) and then again when Shout records owner Bert Berns died suddenly, in the midst of her top 10 R&B hit with "Take Another Piece of My Heart". Never one to quit, Erma continued her day job and moonlighted at her fourth label, Brunswick while releasing "Her Name Is Erma" - one of my favorite albums of the 60's.

Today you'll hear Erma, and plenty of girls and girl groups from around the world, all from the 60's. 7pm Eastern, 4 Pacific WFMU.org Rock'n'Soul Ichiban!

Billy Miller Forever Memorial Celebration

Saturday April 29 at the Music Hall of Williamsburg is a night you do not want to miss.

Billy Miller was a true rock'n'roll guru. Already a feverish record collector and zine writer he founded with his soul-mate Miriam Linna, Kicks magazine in the late 1970s. From there he formed the legendary groups The Zantees and The A-Bones. And if that wasn't enough for a rock'n'souler, he and Miriam opened up Norton Records, with the release of Hasil Adkins' "Out To Hunch" in 1986. He lived and breathed "fandom."

Friends and fans pay tribute to the man who paved the way...

Join in this Saturday in a shivaree for the ages!

Featuring Lenny Kaye, Reigning Sound, Peter Zaremba, Roy Loney, Andy Shernoff, Mick Collins and so many more!

All proceeds from this show go to the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation and The Ponderosa Stomp Foundation

Jean Thomas - Singer, Songwriter, Session girl Extraordinaire!

Jean Thomas unwittingly became one of the most heard voices in the early 60's girl group era - her sweet sounds with the teen style voice are those you often hear as the back up shooby doo wahs on so many girl group records, but Jean sang back ups for the guys too! Jean started as a solo artist, but soon came to the attention of Bob Crewe, who was putting together the Rag Dolls - his girl group answer to the 4 Seasons. Jean's high range and sweet sounds filled the bill for a falsetto lead, and she became the voice of the Rag Dolls, the Cheese Cakes, the Surfer Girls and so many more. She's also the voice behind Neil Diamond's earlier hits, the Beach Nuts and really too many more to count. You can read a lot more about Jean here! and also here and tune in to Crayons to Perfume! this evening at 7pm to hear Jean's voice.
