Crayons To Perfume's Girls of the Week are the Unknown Girls of Arc Records, Canada!

The Arc Sound Company formed in Toronto, Canada in 1958 - headquartered in Scarborough, Ontario in the community of Agincourt. The record label started off ushering in the musical careers of such Canadian luminaries as Anne Murry and Catherine McKinnon (amongst others) but soon turned to churning out Sound-A-Like styled records using local talent to "emulate" current hit records of the day. Some of the records on Arc were credited to the groups who recorded them, but there are also many who used studio musicians from the companies who used Arc's pressing plant. So sadly, many artists, and almost all the women on these records went uncredited. Today, we pay homage to the Unknown Girls of Arc Records, as well as the ladies of Hit Records from Nashville and London, England's Embassy Records - as well as a few surprises!

The Unknown Girls of Arc Records on Crayons to Perfume 11 can be found here and you can find the show archive here. Don't forget check WFMU's rock'n'soul Ichiban each Monday morning for a brand new show, and check out stream filled with all the best music!

Crayons To Perfume's Girl of the Week is Christine Pilzer and the fabulous Femmes de Francais!

Christine Pilzer was the ultimate ye-ye girl! A disc jockey, a mod, a teenager in France who loved just being a teenager! Sneaking out from her parents, hanging with her gang, loving pop music, fashion and comics. She was also an illustrator for comic books! But the one thing she had not done was make a record - and so she did!

Christine is one of the few ye-ye girls who was able to take a light hearted approach to her two EP musical career, and be in control of it - and it's why she still enjoys the memories. See her perform, looking almost exactly as she did in the 60's in her bowl haircut with petite figure and mod dress - with Les Terribles in 2006!

Now listen to a full hour of Crayons To Perfume 16 - French girls, Canadian Girls and other girls who sang in French!

Christine Pilzer: Mon P'tit Homme Spatial
Christine Pilzer:Ils pataugent
Christine Pilzer:Ah-Hem-Ho-Uh-Err
Violaine: Dam dou ah

Claire Lepage - Bam Bam Bam
Karo - dans le ventre d'une enorme baleine

Doo Wop Dames on Crayons to Perfume!

Crayons to Perfume! is reaching a little farther back than usual...back to the 50's and the women who pioneered rhythm & blues and rock'n'roll in Doo Wop groups, specifically in groups with male members (next time around we'll have all girl doo woppers!). Patty & The Emblems are our girl and group of the week, with Patty Russell - considered a one hit wonder for the fantastic soul number Mixed Up, Shook Up Girl. Patty left the music world after the Emblems, but the men in her band went on to have life long careers in music. We also feature Lillian Leach of the Mellows who paved the way for the ladies of the girl group era by being one of the first women to join an all male doo wop group.

Listen here at 7 tonight, or anytime after the show

Crayons To Perfume Girls of the Week: Nichole and Monique of Les Surfs - the Madagascar Movers!

Les Surfs were a family group - brothers and sisters in the Rabaraona family from Madagascar. Nichole and Monique were the only girls in the group, and began their carriers at a very young age - just 7 and 8 years old when they won a television singing contest. This led them on a tour of Madagascar.
In 1963, the group, now named Les Surfs played on French television, and they became very popular covering English pop songs in French. As they toured, they went to Spain and Italy - again, recording popular American (mainly) songs in other languages. The group was tight and classy, wearing the latest fashions and appealing to people of all ages.
By the late 60's the Rabaraona family were getting married and having children, so they decided to end the band. Eventually most of the family emegrated to Canada.

Les Surfs left behind a great string of  hits -  including this EP, with 'Shoop shoop va l'embrasser', fab version of  'It's In His Kiss'.

Crayons to Perfume is coming soon to WFMU's Ichiban Soul, hosted by Glynis Ward, DJ girlgroupgirl

Liberty Ladies! Crayons to Perfume!
