Preparation X (MP3)

Farris Garland & The Lonesome Valley Boys - Preparation X

I have no idea who Farris Garland is or was, but he deserves to be remembered for one of the most remarkable truck driving songs ever recorded. Preparation X is his deliriously cockeyed tribute to Preparation H, the hemorrhoid medication that's been around since the mid 1930s.

For the song, he shrewdly changed the name of the product to Preparation X, no doubt in an attempt to protect the Garland family fortune from Big Pharma's predatory legal sharks.

Since I don't expect I'll ever revisit the subject of hemorrhoid medication here on the blog, I should probably go ahead and mention Dave Dudley's Rolaids, Doan's Pills And Preparation H, a greasy 1980 release that somehow wound up being a minor hit on the Billboard chart. If you have the inclination and a strong stomach to go with it, you can check it out on YouTube.

Lux and Ivy's Favorites Volume Six (remastered)

Sorry for the delay in getting this finished!

Part of the problem was the winter blahs setting in (sadly, the time when I have the most time to do stuff like this is also the time when I really don't feel like doing it!), and the other problem I was running in to was finding decent version of the songs (thus the "remastered" part!).

I think this version is a bit better than the version that already exists. There are a few songs with infinitely better sounding files like a pristine copy of Slide Her Under the Door. It almost sounds TOO good. I was so used to the version on the Wavy Gravy LP (which was taken from a cassette tape!), that this new version took some getting used to.

The other thing I'm most proud of is the Psychedelic masterpiece that Michael Deforge came up with for the cover of this edition. There are more ideas per square inch in this piece that I get lost in it every time I look at it. As part of the download, I've also included the original that he sent me so you can really get a good look at it.

For information, or to see more of his artwork check out http://www.kingtrash.com/

As usual, Adam Fitch put everything together art wise. Thanks to him and the people who helped finding some of the better versions of mp3's.

Next up will be volume 1-3 which will have artwork by French artist Slim Gil DeLuxe (1 + 2) and J.R. Williams (3).

Elizabeth and Richard

“She has wonderful eyes, but she has a double chin and an overdeveloped chest, and she’s rather short in the leg.”   -Richard Burton, who married Liz Taylor twice

Elizabeth Taylor has checked out on us after an amazing career that managed to embody the heights of high glamour and the depths of horrifying vulgarity, sometimes all at once. There will be plenty of well-written obituaries and career overviews to come; our job at Ichiban on this sombre occasion is to share with you this tribute to the most famous champions of drunken matrimony and amour fou ever to walk the planet.

Hillbilly Hades

Texas Bill Strength - Hillbilly Hades (3:07)

In 1955, Eddie Dean had the biggest hit of his career with a maudlin effort called I Dreamed Of A Hillbilly Heaven. The song details Dean's dream about about the aftermath of his own death and his experiences of being welcomed into heaven, where he encounters all his favorite deceased country stars. In 1961, Tex Ritter revived it and had a hit with it as well. You can see Tex doing it live over on YouTube. Unfortunately, the embedding feature on the clip has been disabled.

Texas Bill Strength's Hillbilly Hades is a slyly hilarious parody that came out in 1970.
