"Not Even a Mediocre Time...!"
Who is Cathy? Who are Poag and Hutcheson? When and more importantly why was this disc ever recorded? Completely mysterious and practically indescribable, I offer you the Epic "My Name Is Cathy."
If so, here's my theory. The Nick Dembling on the label is 'Nik North' of the Comateens. His sister Sophie wrote a book called "The Yankee Chicks Guide to Texas", so I assume she once lived or now lives in Texas.
Maybe this record came into the world via her trash bin???
I know, I'm insane...but it's at least half of my charm, so I persist.
I guess the real question is one of intent. Is this a person trying to make a bad record and suceeding brilliantly or a person trying to make a good record and failing so spectacularly that they still managed to accidentally create something "great?"
"I poach a good egg. But I'm all poached out when it comes to love."
Nonetheless, I'll likely never play this tune again!
However, I love the Comateens' "Cool Chick" and I do see how there could be a connection... ana-b, do you know everything about everything? I'm in awe. ;-)
Hi everybody...Nick Dembling here from Comateens. A friend of mine sent me the link to this story. Here's what I can tell you about this:
1 - I was the disc mastering engineer at MediaSound recording studios for two years, 1978 - 79; I very well might have cut this disc in my studio. It's a lacquer, not a vinyl record. With a real MediaSound label on it.
2 - I have NO idea who these people are and who is singing.
3 - I have no memory whatsoever of this song.
4 - I think someone else typed that label and used my name, because I certainly don't remember doing it and I have a great memory!
5 - One of the girls singing on it sounds vaguely like Ramona Jan, one of the original members of Comateens.
You found this in Texas, right Jukebox?

Exquisite in it's blatentness. This could have been an outtake from The G.T.O.'s 1968 sessions for Zappa. Eh, matey?
ReplyDelete@timmy: Could be. I think I just really want to believe that this is not a put on...

So I'll have to ask my sister about this!
Wow! What a startling development. Thanks for checking in Nick!
